New York Times reporter Robert Sullivan has an article, “The Wild Bunch” in today’s paper. Sullivan, an avid cyclist, details the daily battle of car vs. cyclist, cyclist vs. cyclist and cyclist vs. peds on the city’s streets.
While the city is introducing more bike friendly policies, too many riders disregard any and all traffic laws and have too little consideration for fellow cyclists and other human beings.
We as a cycling organization must pay attention to this problem. We must work for safer conditions for cycling and also do our best to get cyclists riding safely. Stop at lights; don’t ride against traffic.
A group started by David Zabriskie, Yield To Life has an excellent statement on creating safer conditions for cycling and the responsibilities of cyclists. It’s worth a look.
Please let’s do our share to make things safer out on the roads.
